Tunisian wool rug from the south of the country near Tataouine. These rugs are hand-made by women in the region who sell their rugs to supplement their household income. Each rug is unique, although the use of symbols is common, and many of the same symbols are used in particular regions to denote their origin. Regional, tribal and familial symbols are woven into these rugs, and the practice is passed down generationally from mother to daughter. The beauty of these carpets is that no one carpet is the same. There are 'imperfections' in the weaving which are proof that they are hand-made, rather than mass-produced.
